Program Description
"Puzzle Piece Phonics is Word Study for Balanced Literacy. Students study focus patterns for one week at a time. They connect the current focus patterns to other similar phonics patterns and learn to decode and encode the patterns throughout the week. This happens through formal instruction about each phonics pattern, guided practice reading and writing words that contain the pattern, and independent practice sorting, reading, and writing the words in isolation and in context. Students also learn to use references found in the classroom to apply their knowledge when reading and writing in all content areas." According to EdReport’s Science of Reading Snapshot, this program addresses 3/5 foundational literacy components for grades K-1, and 2/5 for grade 2.
